Inselbergs. The Olgas or Kata Tjuta inselbergs in the Northern Territory, Australia. Inselbergs are steep-sided hills of solid rock that rise out of a plain because of the erosion of the material around them. Situated near Ayers Rock, the highest peak of the Olgas is 546 metres above the surrounding area, whilst the base of the whole group has a circumference of about 22 kilometres. The Olgas are formed of red cemented conglomerate. The troughs between the individual peaks are deep, trapping water and allowing lush vegetation to grow despite the dry climate. The Olgas occupy an important place in Aboriginal mythology, and also draw many tourists.
